A&A Interior Gallery invites you to the Lecture by Egor Korolev “Artists in Exile: A Historical Journey" as part of the exhibition "Bay of Kotor: Stage of Light and Air" waretcolour by Anna Ilina.

Egor Korolev, a Balkan scholar, PhD in Political Science and lecturer, will devote his lecture to the artists of the XXth-century Russian emigration.

It is particularly difficult for artists to leave their homeland, as in exile they must seek new sources of inspiration and adapt to new subjects and themes. Often, painters were reluctant to part with their studios until the very last moment, yet one day Ilya Repin, Nikolai Roerich and Zinaida Serebryakova found themselves in exile. Just like their lesser-known colleagues, who moved to Turkey, Yugoslavia, France and other foreign countries. A hundred years ago, several artists sailed into the Bay of Kotor. Their paintings are still kept in museums in Montenegro.

As part of the #MontenegroContextLab project and Anna Ilina’s exhibition in A&A Interior gallery, we invite you to the lecture on artists in exile. We will discover:

- why Ilya Repin did not emigrate, yet one day found himself an exile?

- how Nikolai Roerich missed his homeland?

- how did artists from the first wave of emigration earn a living?

- how did the legacy of Alexander Benois and Zinaida Serebryakova return to Russia?

The lecture will be given by Egor Korolev (in Russian language), lecturer at the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences in Montenegro, PhD in Political Science, researcher on the Balkans, and creator of the ‘Emigration with a Rucksack’ channel
