A&A Interior Gallery invites you to the opening of the exhibition “Hypostases. Three Ages of a Woman. Female Images in Montenegrin Art”, that includes the art works of seven Montenegrin authors: painters Naod Zorić, Darja Bajagić, Goran Ćetković, Sekana Radović, Vesna Sušić и sculptors Zoran Obrenović и Rajko Sušić.
There are countless works of art throughout history dedicated to women and their image. This is primarily because the image of a woman has been an enduring source of inspiration for generations of artists, from ancient times to the present day. One of the most archetypal images in human culture is that of the Mother Goddess, a timeless symbol of motherhood itself. It embodies humanity’s relationship with the cosmos, nature, and the mysteries of birth and death—the image of Mother Earth, who gives life and to whom life returns. It is no coincidence, then, that we have chosen motherhood as the theme of the first section of our exhibition.
Our aim was to explore all ages of a woman’s life and the various hypostases of her identity within these ages, as depicted by Montenegrin artists. Thus, we open the exhibition with the theme of motherhood (Goran Ćetković, Zoran Obrenović) and close it with the image of the Pietà—a mother cradling her dead son (Naod Žorić, Wounded Man). The latter is the most powerful and profound symbols in human consciousness, perennially striking us with its emotional resonance. It is fundamental to the Christian culture in which we were raised. Subconsciously conceived by the artist, it reflects the central paradigm of Christian civilisation: the birth and burial of a son in his mother’s arms, human life beginning and ending in the embrace of the Mother Earth, the Motherland, the Mother Church, and all mothers of the lineage, through whom the thread of our ancestry runs.
What are the different hypostases of womanhood? They include sensuality (Goran Ćetković, Zoran Obrenović, Rajko Šušić), solitude (Darja Bajagić), and self-discovery (Sekana Radović). Following the logic of the exhibition’s title, we have selected works that reveal the formation of a woman in childhood (Vesna Šušić) and her final days in old age (Naod Žorić).
Woman as symbol is inseparable from the history of art itself—there has never been an era in which she has not been depicted. Why is this image imbued with such magic? What meanings does it evoke in our perception? How do we interpret these ideas? These are questions for every visitor to contemplate.
Exhibition Curator - Anastasia Degtyareva
The exhibition will be open from March 29 to April 29, 2025.
