It is a way of bitter suffering. but then our solitude is overcome, we are no longer alone, for we find that our innermost self is the spirit, that it is God, the indivisible. and suddenly we find ourselves in the midst of the world, yet undisturbed by its multiplicity, for our innermost soul we know ourselves to be one with all being...”
Mila Halizova represents a new generation of creators. The basis of her practice is the exploration of natural elements, respect for nature, and the search for new beauty. On linen canvases, Mila creates objects whose visual impression stems from their tactility. Components are reduced to a minimum, and the laconic presentation allows the viewer to appreciate the sculptural quality, harmony of the combined materials, and the beauty of natural substances. The simplicity of the compositions belies the complex process of their creation.
Large-format works produce the most unexpected materials: acorns, seeds, inflorescences, fir cones, crowberries washed ashore by a storm. All resources Mila Halizova finds herself on long hikes along the sea coast and forest. More recent investigations of her studio practice include soil, gypsum and resin.
The attractiveness of images' manifestation is timeless. The artist includes the natural world in the decor, preserving but not embellishing plant forms. Nature is allowed to dictate processes; human intervention is minimal. Panels are eclogitic — both in terms of direct contact with people and in the philosophical sense of the interaction between Man and Nature.
Mila Halizova
Mila Halizova was born in 1992. As the granddaughter of a cabinetmaker and a pediatrician, she has long been fascinated by these natural sources of inspiration and manual work.
From 2010-2016, she studied at the Institute of Architecture, Department of Costume Design in Penza. During her studies, she worked in her atelier, where she experimented with textiles. After her graduation, she continued to work at her atelier and started her brand, Mila Halizova.
As an independent artist, she won an art contest at Moscow Art Square, where she was granted free education at a university. During this period, clothing was a central outcome of her creative process. She prefers to use quality, mostly natural and recycled materials, with the idea of upcycling. The way it comes together is organic.
However, designing clothes eventually became less important to her. She wanted to explore her artistic vision because it was always more than just designing clothes. She moved to Kaliningrad, where she had a studio and experimented with natural and recycled products. She challenged herself to make functional designs and art objects, inspired by the Baltic Sea, culture, and tradition.
Since 2022, she has been producing her new works in Montenegro.
